I remember the lead up to my undergraduate show –– a blur of nerves and anticipation as I installed the project that has consumed almost 12 months of my life (mental, emotional and physical). For most students, it is the first time artworks are shared with the public. With regards to art, it might be the first time one declares: this is me. I have shared this landmark with students over the past few years, a decade or so after my own Honours graduate exhibition. Documenting this event is a big job, kinda like 25-30 individual solo exhibitions in one location, at one time. The window to capture everything is narrow and sticking to the run sheet is crucial especially when taking portraits. The result of this shoot is a starter pack for each emerging artist –– a portfolio of images, a headshot and portrait with their work –– ready for a future opportunities. These images might be used on a new website or instagram profile, for a residency or exhibition application, support material for a grant proposal, or as part of the bio in an upcoming publication. In my own experience as an artist, having shots of recent work and a portrait or two on hand is key to securing the next big thing. It may sound daggy but this documentation is also a great time capsule, a record of an artist’s journey. As the photographer, this interaction is an opportunity to meet the next generation of artists. To spend time with their work, see the new themes, ideas and perspectives emerging, and get to know the people behind the art. For me it is also the start of a longer conversation as I continue to document an artist’s work into the future, and in some cases the beginning of a creative relationship –– previous undergrads have featured in recent curatorial projects. My name is Dan and I am a visual artist based in Meanjin / Brisbane. I first started photographing my own artwork back at uni in the late naughties, which quickly turned into photographing my friends work, and shortly after that capturing the exhibitions of the ARIs I was involved with. That was a while ago though, the tech has changed and so has the scale. Since then I have shot a range of artwork –– paintings, prints, sculptures, video, light works, textiles, and installations –– in different contexts –– white wall galleries, shopping centre basements, hotel rooms, artist run initiatives (ARI), heritage buildings, libraries and saunas –– with different clients –– artists, collectives, curators, directors and corporates. This has even led to photo-doc inspiring my own art project! &nbsp; I have over 15 years experience as an art handler and installer working with local, national and international artists both on the east and west coast at a range of different state and university institutions, corporate collections, commercial galleries, festivals and ARIs. There’s something about distilling the essence of a work, the sharpest most clean version of it that sets me at ease (whatever floats your boat hey). A strong, balanced image that sets detail in a solid composition is what I strive for. Although it is never as good as the real thing, a popping image can capture someones attention and makes them want to know more –– whether it is in an application, shared on social media or printed on a poster. Objectively documenting a project in its exhibition space or environment is the foundation, an archive of what was there, the exhibition design and how it sits in the space. From that point I like to move in, play with shapes, lines, patterns and architecture to not only capture the intricate details of the work itself, but its dialogue with the space it is in.
